How Many Eggs Do Ducks Lay?
Annual egg totals vary widely among breeds and individual hens, and real production changes with age, season, daylight, molt, nutrition, and health.
First-Year Production
A young duck’s first eggs may be small, irregularly shaped, soft-shelled, or laid at inconsistent intervals while the reproductive system settles into a rhythm. Production often becomes more predictable after the first several weeks.
Do not push a young layer with excessive supplements. A complete ration, clean water, adequate space, and low stress support safer development better than trying to force maximum output immediately.
Winter Slowdown
Healthy adult ducks handle cold best when their feathers, bedding, and feet stay dry. Block wind at resting height, keep water unfrozen, and prevent spilled water from creating ice inside the shelter.
Tracking Flock Output
A simple calendar or spreadsheet can reveal the flock’s normal pattern. Record daily egg count, shell quality, weather, molt, broodiness, feed changes, and any hidden nests that are discovered.
Trends matter more than a single low day. A sudden flock-wide drop suggests a shared cause such as weather, predator stress, feed access, or light, while one duck declining may point to age, broodiness, or an individual health problem.
