Duck Winter Care
Healthy adult ducks usually handle cold weather well when they can stay dry, escape wind, eat enough energy, and drink unfrozen water. Wet bedding and ice are often more dangerous than low air temperature alone.
Dry Shelter and Ventilation
Close drafts at duck level while preserving high ventilation that removes moisture and ammonia. A tightly sealed house becomes damp quickly from respiration and wet feathers.
Add dry bedding as needed and remove saturated material rather than covering an increasingly wet base indefinitely.
Water Without an Ice Rink
Ducks need liquid water deep enough to submerge the bill even in freezing weather. Place containers where spills can drain and where ice will not block the house entrance.
Heated bases and buckets must be rated for animal use, protected from chewing and water, connected safely, and checked every day.
Feet, Frostbite, and Snow
Provide dry straw, mats, boards, or another foot-safe resting surface. Inspect feet for pale, dark, swollen, or damaged areas after severe cold.
Many ducks enjoy snow briefly, but crusted ice, deep drifts, and frozen mud can strain legs and hide sharp hazards.
Feed and Body Condition
Cold increases energy demand. Maintain complete feed access, monitor body condition, and avoid relying on corn or treats as the primary ration.
Egg production may fall with shorter days. Artificial lighting and forced laying are management decisions that should not compromise rest or nutrition.
Winter Duck Care Checklist
- Keep bedding dry and ventilation high.
- Block direct drafts at bird level.
- Provide unfrozen head-dunking water.
- Prevent ice around doors and drinkers.
- Monitor body condition, feet, and appetite during cold spells.
Dry Shelter Matters More Than a Hot Shelter
Healthy fully feathered adult ducks usually tolerate cold well when they can rest out of wind on dry bedding. Sealing a house tightly to hold heat can trap moisture and ammonia, increasing frostbite and respiratory risk.
Keep high ventilation open, replace wet bedding promptly, and prevent drafts directly across resting birds. Supplemental heat introduces fire and condensation risks and is rarely the first solution.
Water Access Must Continue Without Creating Ice Hazards
Ducks still need water deep enough to rinse their bills and nostrils. Heated bases, frequent bucket changes, or insulated containers can maintain access, but cords and heating elements must be protected from bills and moisture.
Move the water station away from entrances and walking paths so splash does not freeze into a slick surface. Use textured mats, gravel, or fresh bedding where traction is poor.
Watch Feet, Body Condition, and Vulnerable Birds
Check feet for pale, gray, darkened, swollen, or damaged tissue. Muscovy caruncles and exposed facial skin, injured birds, seniors, and very small breeds may need extra protection.
Cold weather can raise feed intake. Ensure every duck reaches the feeder, provide unfrozen water with meals, and monitor weight rather than relying only on the amount of feed disappearing.
