Duckling Brooder Setup
Create a warm, dry, nonslip brooder with safe water, complete starter feed, ventilation, and enough space for rapid duckling growth.
Choose a Secure, Washable Brooder
Use a container tall enough to prevent escapes and large enough for ducklings to move between warm and cool zones. The floor should be solid, level, and easy to clean. Wire floors and slick plastic can contribute to foot and leg problems.
Plan for rapid growth. A brooder that looks spacious on hatch day can become crowded within a week, especially with Pekins and other fast-growing breeds.
Create a Warm Zone and a Cooler Escape
Heat one end rather than the entire brooder. Ducklings should be able to move closer when chilled and farther away when warm. Observe behavior: tight piling and loud peeping suggest cold, while panting and avoiding the heater suggest excess heat.
Secure heat equipment so it cannot fall, contact bedding, or be splashed. Use a thermometer as a check, but let evenly distributed duckling behavior guide adjustments.
Use Dry, Nonslip Bedding
Start with absorbent bedding that provides traction, such as clean pine shavings over a nonslip base. Avoid cedar, dusty litter, newspaper alone, and towels with loose loops that can catch toes.
Remove soaked patches several times a day. If the brooder smells strongly, the bedding and ventilation are already inadequate.
Build a Safe Water Station
Ducklings need water deep enough to immerse the bill and clear the nostrils, but the container should prevent swimming and climbing. Place it on a stable catch tray or raised mesh platform that drains away from the resting area.
Keep water beside feed and check it frequently. A duckling that becomes soaked under a weak heat source can chill quickly.
Provide Complete Starter Feed
Use a waterfowl starter or a carefully selected unmedicated poultry starter with an appropriate niacin plan. Keep feed dry and continuously available for young ducklings unless a veterinarian recommends otherwise.
Do not replace starter with bread, scratch grain, lettuce, or treats. Fast growth requires concentrated balanced nutrition.
Increase Space and Lower Heat Gradually
Expand the brooder before crowding causes trampling, wet bedding, and blocked access to feed. Lower heat based on feathering, room temperature, and behavior rather than following the calendar blindly.
Prepare the next housing stage before the ducklings outgrow the brooder. Outdoor transitions should account for nighttime temperatures, wind, rain, predators, and the birds’ feather development.
