Choose Feed by Life Stage
Ducklings need a starter that supports rapid growth and supplies dependable niacin. Growing juveniles usually transition to a grower ration, while mature nonlaying adults and drakes do not need the extra calcium found in layer feed.
Laying females need a balanced ration and access to calcium. In a mixed flock, many keepers use an all-flock feed and provide oyster shell separately so birds can regulate additional calcium intake.
Read the Label, Not Just the Bag Name
Feeds sold under similar names can have different protein, calcium, niacin, and medication levels. Check the guaranteed analysis, intended species, age range, and manufacturer directions.
Avoid medicated chick feed unless the medication is specifically confirmed safe and appropriate for ducks. A waterfowl veterinarian or experienced feed professional can help when labels are unclear.
Treats Should Not Dilute the Complete Ration
Peas, leafy greens, insects, and garden extras can be enjoyable enrichment, but they should remain a small part of total intake. Bread, cracked corn, scratch, and sweet fruit can fill ducks before they eat the feed that supplies essential amino acids and minerals.
Offer complete feed first, provide enough feeder space for timid birds, and store bags in a dry rodent-resistant container. Discard feed that smells musty, has heated or clumped, or shows mold.
